Background | IL-1β is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine produced and secreted by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. IL-1β is initially synthesized as an inactive precursor (pro-IL-1β) and is activated by caspase-1 within the inflammasome in response to inflammatory stimuli, including microbial products and endogenous danger signals. The mature IL-1β exerts its effects through the type I IL-1 receptor (IL-1R1), regulating inflammatory responses and participating in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Additionally, IL-1β plays a significant regulatory role in female reproduction. Abnormal expression of IL-1β is associated with various auto-inflammatory syndromes, such as CAPS, which is caused by mutations in the inflammasome receptor NLRP3 that lead to excessive IL-1β activation. |
